$1.1 Billion -> $3 Million

Thank you Verizon, Oath and Tumblr Staff for making this incredible flop possible. Couldn’t have imagined what would have gone wrong if you kept to the core product and actually improved it!

david:

Just wanted to add my congratulations and thank you to everyone at WordPress and Tumblr.

Matt is a visionary, and the team at WordPress has built something absolutely foundational to the Internet. What an amazing home and opportunity for Tumblr.

You made over $200M dollars and couldn’t help buy Tumblr back? Screw all of these congratulatory messages, and SCREW YOU! This guy SOLD OUT and destroyed one of the best creative communities on the planet. All those Tumblr rooftop parties and A-list celebrity events mean nothing now when your community can’t support themselves MR. KRAP.

How TF do you take a $1.1Billion dollar company and run it into the ground? Fucking incompetency that’s how. Every business decision was sabotage.

Many of us invested years of our lives building these brands on Tumblr that we can’t get back. Reckless and uninformed decisions destroyed the vibrant community that once thrived.

We tried to help fix this but Tumblr did not want to listen. I flew out to Tumblr HQ to meet with then Tumblr CEO David Karp to discuss ways of better engaging with the community, opening up the ability for tumblr users to shop other tumblr users products directly from the dashboard, and we proposed the idea of bringing back a re-engineered version of the tumblr featured tags that helped skyrocket tumblr to popularity. As the head of Minuscule Network at the time, I represented the interests of 25Million subscribers on Tumblr.

David cancelled our meeting as I walked in to HQ. Tumblr did not compensate me for my trip, so essentially I paid to fly to HQ, paid for a hotel and transportation to discuss issues with Tumblr on the behalf of tumblr creators and curators (IN NEW YORK CITY// SHIT AINT CHEAP), and he cancelled as soon as I arrived. He knew i was flying in for this meeting. This is the sort of blatant disrespect of Tumblr’s leadership towards their community.

Let’s hope this change puts sensible people in charge of Tumblr. It’ll be the first time for the platform.

Sacred Spaces (Thibaud Portier)
A series on modernist churches

Over the millennia, churches have shifted back and forth from centers of community to individual introspection and reflection, pausing periodically along the scale as a new denomination upset the balances of tradition.

The modern church is a delicate institution; under siege from countering theologies, philosophies and the super speed of daily life, it must at once withstand the constant tempest of change while remaining anchored to tradition. The way the most long-standing institutions have done this is by finding a balance: deep roots that touch the core of humanity and yet a flexible reedlike ability to bend and sway with the tensions of modernity.

Architecturally, Thibaud Poirier was inspired by the astounding variety of church design. There are only but a few physical signs that bind them together: a visual focal point, usually but not always a cross, rows of seating trained on the visual cue, and a space clearly designed to spark wonder, reflection, devotion.

These are spaces that we’re designed to repeatedly draw one in, and create sacred long lasting relationships with visitors. Ranging from a cosy monk-like modest chapel to elaborate ethereal cathedrals with vaulted archways stretching to the heavens, their variety of worship spaces is as diverse as it is personal. In this series Thibaud Poirier wanted to capture a few of the most exceptional sacred spaces, to show how they interpret the institution stylistically and concretely shape radically different interiors for people to worship.

And yet despite their great stylistic differences, the glue between these churches remains invisible to the human eye yet vibrates within each of us: the emotional state created whilst one is present. The sense of belonging. The conviction of something larger than us all.
